Glen Sather, a legendary figure in hockey, announced his retirement as the senior adviser to the owner and alternate governor of the New York Rangers. At the age of 80, Sather has decided to step down after an illustrious career that spanned six decades in the sport.

Throughout his time with the Rangers, Sather served as the team’s president and general manager for 14 and 19 years, respectively, before transitioning into his advisory role five years ago. Prior to his tenure with the Rangers, he led the Edmonton Oilers to five Stanley Cup championships as a general manager, with four of those coming as a head coach. Sather’s contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997.

In a statement regarding his retirement, Sather expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he had working with both the Rangers and the Oilers. He thanked Jim Dolan for the chance to join the Rangers organization 24 years ago and acknowledged the dedication of everyone within the Rangers franchise. Sather also expressed his appreciation for the passion and loyalty of the Rangers fans, stating that the experience would always hold a special place in his heart.

Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury, who played under Sather for four seasons, praised Sather for his guidance and support throughout his career. Drury credited Sather with giving him the opportunity to play for the Rangers and for providing valuable insights as he transitioned into a front office role. He wished Sather and his family the best in their future endeavors.

Sather’s coaching record speaks for itself, with 14 seasons at the helm of the Edmonton franchise and parts of two seasons with the Rangers. His all-time record of 592-383-7 with 128 ties showcases his leadership and dedication to the sport.
