In a recent Formula 1 race at the Shanghai International Circuit, RB driver Daniel Ricciardo was penalized for overtaking Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg under safety car conditions on lap 28. Ricciardo received a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points for the offense. The incident occurred after Ricciardo had been hit by Lance Stroll at the previous safety car restart, resulting in heavy damage to his car and ultimately forcing him to retire from the race.

According to the stewards’ report, Ricciardo admitted that he overtook Hulkenberg deliberately but believed he was allowed to do so because Hulkenberg had overtaken him under safety car conditions earlier in the race. However, the stewards found that there was no justifiable basis for Ricciardo to overtake Hulkenberg while the race was under safety car conditions. As a result, Ricciardo was handed a 10-second time penalty, which he was unable to serve due to his retirement from the race. In addition to the time penalty, Ricciardo also received a three-grid place penalty for the next race he participates in.

Ricciardo expressed frustration over the incident, particularly towards Lance Stroll, whom he felt was responsible for the collision that ended his race prematurely. The Australian driver described Stroll’s actions as “making my blood boil” and was left disappointed by the outcome of the race.

In addition to Ricciardo’s penalty, Alpine was also hit with a retrospective penalty for an unsafe incident during a pitstop. Pierre Gasly was given the green light to leave his pit box despite the rear-right wheel not being properly attached. The wheel dislodged as Gasly’s car hit the ground, knocking over a mechanic in the process. Gasly did not leave the pit box until the wheel was appropriately secured, but the team was still penalized for the unsafe release.

The incident involving Ricciardo and the retrospective penalty for Alpine highlight the importance of safety and rule adherence in Formula 1. Both drivers and teams must be vigilant and follow the regulations to ensure fair and safe racing for all competitors involved.
